The fourteen projects, that make up the individual blocks and tops of each pole, are carved both in relief and in the round. This will give you the opportunity to try both methods of wood carving. The finished pole consists of a base, from any type wood, a hardwood dowel whose length can vary as needed, 3" long blocks with widths ranging from 2" square to 1 1/2" square or round, and with various tops. These dimensions are not chiseled in stone but are used by me in this book and in kits I provide when I teach these projects in a class. Your blocks and top can be whatever size will suit you and your pole, after all, it's your totem pole. Above all, have fun!!!
